Tips For Using Office Design To Improve Productivity

Juanita Douglas

Those who want to be more productive (or have their employees be more productive) may want to look into the research on the effects of different office designs on productivity. Surprisingly enough, relatively simple changes can have positive effects.

Office Furniture

The first thing you might want to pay attention to is the furniture in the office. This furniture needs to be properly suited for the individual using it. This means desks and office chairs need to be sized appropriately for the person using them and office chairs should be ergonomic and adjustable. Otherwise, a person is likely to be more focused on how uncomfortable they are than on the work they're supposed to be doing. Using furniture that isn't the right size can also lead to back problems or other issues that could make it so employees need to miss work in the future.

Edges Versus Rounded Designs

Purchasing furniture with rounded edges rather that sharp corners and using a more curved layout for the furniture in the office may improve productivity as well as making a room more pleasing to the eye. This is why people sometimes recommend a round table for meetings where a lot of collaboration is necessary.

Color Considerations

Even the colors used in the office decor can affect how productive a person is. It seems that brighter, more saturated colors tend to increase productivity more than muted colors in general. After that, it depends on the area of focus which color might be best for your purposes. People who want to stimulate their minds may find they're more productive in a blue room, where people who want to be more creative may find a yellow room is preferable for increasing productivity. People with physical jobs may want to have some red in their offices, while green can help provide a sense of balance. You can get the benefits of multiple colors by including each in the office design.

Workspace Design

While having some open spaces where people can work together can increase productivity, this can also cause problems if all that's available is one large open space. In an office environment, it may be best to give each person at least some personal space where they have privacy and can work without constant interruptions. This can be accomplished by using office partitions. A mix of divided and open spaces may be the best solution, but this all depends on the company culture. Having a discussion with all the employees can help determine just which type of workspace design may be best in any given company.

About Me
Flower Planting 101: Simplifying Your Planting Maps

One of the things that I always loved about spring as a kid was watching all of the flowers my mother planted suddenly come up from the ground and then bloom into vibrant, beautiful colors. When I bought my own house, one of the first things I wanted to do was plant flowers. What I didn't realize was how hard it could be to figure out what to plant where. From the sun demand to the companion planting guides, it was complicated. I created this site to help others just like me create the flower gardens they always wanted without the struggles that I faced.
